Teaching as a Career in Sikkim

The education department of Sikkim holds Teachers' Eligibility Test (TET) for the recruitment of primary and high school teachers. To be eligible to become a school teacher in Sikkim, one has to opt for B.Ed or Bachelor of Education degree which can be done from any recognised colleges or institutes in Sikkim. The completion of  B.Ed degree makes a student eligible to work as a teacher in the different secondary and higher secondary schools in Sikkim.

For Nursery and pre-school teaching, along with a  graduate degree, a diploma or Certificate in Pre-school teacher education programme of a duration of not less than one year, or B.Ed is required. Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed.) or Diploma of Elementary Education (D.El.Ed.)  is mandatory for teaching at the primary level.

To become a teacher in the College and university level in Sikkim, one does not have to undergo any formal teacher training but has to qualify for National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by UGC or SLET North East.. The minimum qualification to apply for NET/SET is a postgraduate degree or equivalent. Qualifying the NET/SET makes a candidate eligible to apply for the Assistant Professor position in any college and universities in Sikkim.

The SCERT is the governing authority for Teachers' Education in Sikkim at state level.
