One of the most scenic states of India, Sikkim has also made tremendous improvements in the fields of education. The rate of literacy in the state has seen a phenomenal rise from 68.81% according to the 2001 census reports to more than 82% in the 2011. Over the years Sikkim has witnessed a surge in the number of schools and colleges in this small hill state.
School Education in Sikkim
The schools like most other states in India follow the 10 plus 2 system. The medium of instruction in most schools in Sikkim is English, though Nepali and Tibetan is also taught. The central and state government authorities have also introduced the ‘Sarva Siksha Abhiyan’ to encourage the education of every child in Sikkim, especially the children living in the interiors of the Himalaya mountains. Most of the schools are affiliated to the CBSE and few to the ICSE Board.
Higher Education in Sikkim
With the demand of higher education increasing in the state, the government has started several colleges in Sikkim. These centres of higher education are equipped with all the infrastructure facilities and quality teachers. Sikkim is popular for professional courses as is evident by the number of students enrolled every year in Sikkim Manipal University. Sikkim Government Law College offers courses in law while Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology offers courses in engineering.
