Sikkim Manipal University (SMU)
The Sikkim Manipal University (SMU) formerly known as Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences came into existence on November 15, 1992 as a result of the agreement signed between the Government of Sikkim and the Manipal Pai Foundation, with the aim of imparting exemplary education and health care services in the state of Sikkim and country wide.
This is the nation's first-ever public-private partnership for health care and higher education. The university is divided into two campuses: one for technology and the other for medicine. The hospital, CRH, receives an annual grant of Rs. 2.25 crores from the Government of Sikkim. This funding is used to give free care to BPL households and discounted treatment to other State citizens.
Under the Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences Act (Act No. 9 of 1995), the university was founded in 1995. Through letter No. 9-7/96(CPP-I) dated December 9, 1998, the University Grants Commission recognised SMU by Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956, with approval from the Indian government. The university's programs are authorised by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the Indian Association of Physiotherapy, the Medical Council of India (MCI), the Nursing Council of India, and the Distance Education Council.
The Sikkim Legislative Assembly enacted the Sikkim Manipal University of Health Medical and Technological Sciences (Amendment) Act No. 13 of 2009 on December 12, 2009, and the Governor of Sikkim ratified it on January 22, 2010.
