Higher Education in Sikkim is provided by Institutions of Central Government and State Government. There are many education administering bodies that work at both levels to offer education to youth of Sikkim. On a broader spectrum Higher Education is diversified over two streams of study.
General Higher Education in Sikkim
Under this comes mainly 3 year Under Graduate programmes leading to award of Bachelor’s degrees. Popular study streams are Arts, Science and Commerce. Students who complete bachelor’s degree are eligible to apply for Postgraduate programmes. These programmes could be in general study areas or professional and technical areas. Also these students can chose to apply for jobs where eligibility is Bachelor’s degree.
Technical and Professional Higher Education in Sikkim
Under This category comes courses like: 4 Year Bachelor’s degree programmes for example; Engineering and Medical etc. There are two popular study routes. 1. Candidates have successfully studied science subjects at +2 level with Mathematics. 2. Candidates have successfully studied Science subjects with Biology at +2 level. Besides public funded institutions there are also many private colleges, universities and institutes of higher education in Sikkim.
Admission to Higher Education in Sikkim
Admission to higher education programmes in Sikkim are guided according to Central and State government rules. Seat reservation is offered to people from backward societies. General Admission criteria is:
Pass in 10+2 from a recognized board for bachelor's degree admission
Pass in Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college/university for masters and higher.
For professional and technical courses admission students are required to qualify Entrance Examinations.
For General courses admission may be based on merit or entrance exam or both. Also, some institutes may conduct their own separate examination for admission.
