Elementary Education System in Sikkim

Elementary education in Sikkim has seen significant progress, with the state regularly surpassing the national average for literacy. The government of Sikkim has made education a top priority, allocating almost 20% of its budget to the sector. Here are some initiatives that have contributed to the improvement of elementary education in Sikkim:

Directorate of Primary Education
Established in 2013 to address the needs of primary education and to provide a strong foundation for young children

Kindergarten system

Introduced in all government schools in 2016.

Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA)

A program to provide elementary education to children between the ages of 6 and 14, and to bridge social, regional, and gender gaps.

Restructuring plan
A plan to overhaul the pre-primary and primary education sector, with a focus on teachers, physical infrastructure, and technological infrastructure

Sikkim's educational framework includes: 768 government schools, 417 private schools, 7 central schools, and 97 monastic schools. While there has been significant progress, some issues remain, especially in rural areas, such as inadequate facilities and physical obstacles.
