Education System in Sikkim

School education in Sikkim is offered through a number of pre-primary, primary, middle, high and higher secondary schools. The Government of Sikkim has implemented free and compulsory education for students up to the age of 14. Schools in Sikkim are either state run or under the management of private organisations .The syllabus at primary schools is established by the Directorate of Elementary Education, Sikkim.

The state government and local authorities in Sikkim are responsible for ensuring that children receive an education, including:
  • Establishing a lower primary school if there are between 10 and 30 children in a locality
  • Organizing safe transportation for children to the nearest school if there are fewer than 10 children in a locality
  • Establishing a school within walking distance of 3 kilometers for children in classes 6–8
  • Upgrading schools with classes 1–5 to include classes 6–8
  • Adding classes 1–5 to schools that start from class 6
  • Locating schools in areas with difficult terrain to avoid danger to young children
The languages used in schools in Sikkim are English, Hindi, and one of the 11 recognized state languages:
  • First language: English is the medium of instruction in government schools.
  • Second language: One of the 11 state languages, such as Bhutia, Lepcha, Limbu, Nepali, Sherpa, Tamang, Gurung, Rai, Newar, Mangar, or Mukhia.
  • Third language: Hindi.
The Sikkim government has also asked private schools to include all 11 local languages in their curriculum.

The Directorate of Languages monitors the development of three additional languages: Hindi, Sanskrit, and Tibetan.
